As I’ve been reading the Psalms, I’ve read over and over again how honest David and the other authors were with God. They question God, accuse him of not caring for his people, and even ask him to kill their enemies.
It seems that we tend to be okay with those Psalms on a personal level but weren’t most of these Psalms meant to be sung on a corporate level? If that is the case, then why doesn’t our music today more closely resemble those kinds of Psalms? Why aren’t we more okay with melancholy, negative, and ultimately more honest kinds of lyrics in our corporate settings? Why does it always have to feel good?
Just asking…
Absolutely! I 100% agree. The Psalms teach us that we can come to God with everything. He hears our praises…and complaints…and heartaches…and joys…and defeats. And he wants us to experience all of life with the knowledge that He is still God, our God.
